FTP

  • How do I set up WS FTP to upload my own home page ?

  • The first step is to dial in and establish a connection!! (We can't stress this one enough!)
  • Double click on the icon for the FTP program. If you do not have the WS_FTP program, you may obtain it Here! You will need WinZip to open this file after you download it... If you do not have WinZip, you may obtain it Here! After you have downloaded and installed ws_ftp, you are ready to continue on with these instructions.
  • If this is the first time that you have started the program, please type in your email address (this is used during the login process by the program)
  • Once you have the program open the Connect screen will come up automatically.
  • This setup is designed to upload your awesome home page that you have spent hours slaving away at. Make sure that you have your username and password handy as this will be necessary to get the process started.
  • Use the following reference picture to type in your settings on the screen. Note that the check mark next to Anonymous login is removed and that your username should be inserted in the UserID section and that be sure to use your personal machine generated extremely ugly password to get in. Also note that in the Remote Host or the Remote Dir box that the directory public_html is typed in. This is very important! Your web pages will not work if you do not include this directory. Once you have the settings typed in, click on the Save or Save Config button. That way you can call up this connection whenever you want to connect to Airstream to upload files to your home directory on badger.

Setup for users of Windows 95 or 98

  • Click on OK to begin the connection. Once you are connected you will be at your home directory.
  • Once you are connected, choose the files on the left hand side of your screen to upload. Click on the arrow that points to right to start the upload.
  • Please note that your initial web site file MUST be called index.html This means that the first page that people will see must be named: index.html If you are unable to save the file on your hard drive with this name, simply upload it a nd once it is there, highlight it and click on Rename. Then type in index.html and click on OK.
  • To access your new web site use the following format in your web browser: http://www.airstreamcomm.net/~username Remember to replace the word username with your personal username/loginID!

    Trouble shooting

The most common error that people encounter when trying to get their website up and running is that they do not store their files in the "public_html" directory.  Make sure that you have public_html in the Remote Host box on the Connection screen and you will never need to worry about this as you will automatically put in that directory when you connect !

Another common mistake is not having the case in the HTML code match the files that you have uploaded. Please note that HTML is case sensitive. This means that if your file is called: Picture.jpg, that your HTML must be written exactly the same way. Many people store all of their files in lower case letters to make things easier to remember.
