Welcome To the Macintosh section of the Support
Site:
The Basic Facts of Mac
If you are a beginner, or even an expert to the Macintosh System, there
are a few very basic things that you will need to know about your computer
before calling for technical support.
- Memory Information on a Macintosh.
(Press the Apple icon, on the desktop, and select "About This
Macintosh...")
Total Memory: The amount of RAM on the Macintosh.
Built In Memory (If Present): The amount of RAM available after
using a RAM Doubler program.
Largest Unused Block: The total amount of available memory
remaining.
- System Software, the Macintosh Operating System.
(Press the Apple icon, on the desktop, and select "About This
Macintosh...")
System Software: 7.1 is the minimum required, and 7.5.3 is current
highest.
- Macintosh Communications Software.
(Press the Apple icon, on the desktop, and select Control Panels.)
Mac TCP or Mac TCP/IP must be pre-installed.
Mac OS 7.1 to 7.5 usually has Mac TCP
Mac OS 7.5 to 7.5.x has TCP/IP with Open Transport
NOTE: There is an overlap in OS 7.5 and either program may be
found.
- Macintosh Program and Software Information.
(Click once on the program’s icon and then press Open Apple & I on the
keyboard) This will display the programs memory requirements, if any,
and the version of the software in use.
- Where Could It Have Gone?
The Airstream User's Guide and Reference Manual give specific
instructions on where to place the Internet software; but sometimes, for
various reasons, the software gets moved. Because Airstream Tech Support
cannot "see" your computer, it is very important that you know where all
your Internet software is on your Macintosh. Please be sure to use the
manual to identify and locate ALL your Airstream software prior to
calling for technical support.
